Life itself was in him, and this life gives light to everyone. The light shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. – John 1:4-5
I can vividly remember being afraid of the dark when I went to bed when I was a child. I would stand at the entrance to my bedroom and literally leap all the way to the bed, quickly hide beneath the covers and worry about what might be lurking underneath the bed’s frame. I do not remember ever having this same fear during the daylight hours. For some reason I could walk through my room with no hesitation or thought of something evil lurking in hidden places when the light was shining through my window.
When Jesus entered into the world He came as a light that would illumine the darkness of our souls. His appearance brought with it an assurance that all would be well if we allowed Him to shine through into the hidden place deep within us. The light of Jesus Christ not only brightens our lives by granting us assurance of a better life yet to come and a meaningful life in the present, but transforms us into light-bearers ourselves. Jesus’ light gives light, and like His light, ours is meant to be shared freely. Thank God for the light that will never go out!
PRAYER THOUGHT: Father, may my light shine as Jesus shines through me.
