"Then who are you? Tell us, so we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?" John replied in the words of Isaiah: "I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, `Prepare a straight pathway for the Lord's coming"'! – John 1:22-23
Of all the possible ways we could be identified as believers in Christ, which would be the most complimentary? We might like to be recognized for our singing ability, or the way we play our instrument. It might be that we would want to be known for our great oratory, or the way that we are willing to use our spiritual gift for the benefit of the Kingdom. Or perhaps what stands out most about us is our willingness to give to the poor, or to help some other person in need. These are all admirable qualities, but not the best possible one.
When John the Baptist was asked to identify himself he simply stated that he was “a voice shouting in the wilderness.” He did not make any claim to greatness, or say that there was something about him that made him stand out in the crowd. John was just a voice – just a man willing to step up to the plate and boldly proclaim the message of the Christ. We need more voices like John’s today. Will you be one of them?
PRAYER THOUGHT: Father, teach me to be a voice for Your Son Jesus Christ. Show me how to get out of the way and let Him shine through.
